Argentina - Slim Recovery In Shrimp Landings

E-mail Print PDF

Monday, October 19, 2009

A total of 45,133.5 tonnes of shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) were landed between 1 January and 15 October of this year in Argentine maritime ports, reveal Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food (SAGP&A) statistics. This volume represents an increase of 9.7 per cent in terms of the 41,110.5 tonnes landed in the same period of 2008.

In Port Deseado, Santa Cruz, 22,823.2 tonnes of shrimp were landed; in Port Madryn, Chubut, 8,267.3 tonnes; in Caleta Olivia/Paula, Santa Cruz, 7,664 tonnes; and in port of Rawson, Chubut 3,339.1 tonnes were landed, among other port terminals.

Through mid-October, shrimp fishing vessels landed 39,971.2 tonnes of shrimp; coastal vessels, 3,154.7 tonnes; rada/ria vessels, 1,061.1 tonnes; fresh fish vessel fleet, 946,6 tonnes.

At any rate, landings have been falling from 1 August to 15 October 2009:
- August: 9,134.3 tonnes;
- September: 8,391.5 tonnes;
- October: 1,659.2 tonnes.

Meanwhile, the Federal Fisheries Council (CFP) unanimously decided to close the zone located between parallels 44º and 45°, in national jurisdictional waters. The measure, which entered into force on Saturday, obeys the fact that the breeding of common hake (Merluccius hubbsi), a species that is usually captured incidentally, begins in that zone at this time of year.

Although the assessment of this season has been positive as far as catch volume, the shrimping sector continues facing commercial difficulties, associated with the low prices fetched on the international market.

According to the National Customs Administration (ANA), 3,880.8 tonnes of shrimp in all its varieties were exported in August for almost USD 21.9 million. These numbers are 15 per cent greater in volume and 43 per cent higher in FOB value than exports in July 2009.

Per August figures, 19,631.9 tonnes of shrimp would have been exported during those eight months at a FOB value of USD 105.4 million. In August, with significant supply and average demand, the minimum and maximum prices remained steady compared to July 2009.
