Indonesia - Shrimp Uniformity Level

E-mail Print PDF
17 October, 2009

Shrimp size on a population at pond is very affected on to technically shrimp culture management process especially at feeding management to be applied. At the age of shrimps come near to normally harvest, shrimp size is very affected on to its price or equally shrimp size have an important value on determining the financial profit level to be obtained.

Based on above mentioned idea, hence this article will be discussed concerning shrimp uniformity level. Simply, shrimp uniformity level can be interpreted as level of shrimp sizes various on a population at relative same age at period of selected time. Size various levels indicate the shrimp on the population have a different size one another.

Ideally, at early phase the fries entered into the pond have relative same size. During shrimp culture process shrimp size on population can change, so the shrimp size initially relative is same to vary one another. This phenomenon occurred more caused by feeding system mainly at early phase / first-month phase (the discussions related to this have been explained on related post beforel). The variation of shrimp size on a population also can reasoned by fry size used at disperse time have owned the relative vary size.

Mainly, the shrimp uniformity level can be grouped as follows :

1. Uniform. Shrimp population within pond has a uniform size and this is a best uniformity level. This condition will be more facilitate in feeding management, water quality management and if defensible to normal harvest, it will be more facilitate in biomass estimate and its price. In field for the shrimp on uniform size, technicians usually give the code with thumb (mean nicely / have one size).

2. Medium uniformity level. Shrimp population within pond relative has not too much various size. This condition need more careful and intensive treatment especially in feeding management, water quality management so expected the shrimp size can reduced its various level. In field for medium uniformity level technicians usually give the code with three fingers (thumb, little finger and forefinger).

3. Serious uniformity level. Shrimp population within pond relative has the size with high variations. This condition if not handled seriously will be able to complicate management of pond. Extremely, this condition can result shrimp cannibalism (small shrimps will be preyed by bigger shrimps), so that indirectly will result decrease amount of shrimps (survival rate) continuity and finally there will be decrease shrimp biomass.

This condition is needed to handle seriously and need a very careful monitoring, and at some condition the management system ( feed, quality and condition of shrimp) can revised again to be adapted from time to time. In field for serious uniformity level technicians usually give the code with five fingers.

Uniformity level like above mentioned can monitored based on observation through sampling activities (by ancho and fish-net) or at feeding program checking time at anco. If the shrimp uniformity level within pond have been known hence decision making will direct on maintaining (for uniform shrimp), improving (for medium uniformity), or revising (for serious uniformity) depended from observed results.
